Gris-Peg Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Griseofulvin

Griseofulvin is an antifungal medication. It is act like an antibiotic but it is used to treat fungal infections. Gris-PEG is used to treat the following ringworm infections: Athlete's foot, Barber's itch (inflammation of the facial hair follicles), Ringworm of the body, Ringworm of the groin and thigh, Ringworm of the nails, Ringworm of the scalp. Griseofulvin medication works by stopping the growth of fungi. It does not used to treat infections due to bacteria or yeast.

Gris-Peg Dosage

  • You can take 375 milligrams as a single dosage in a day or you can divided a single dose into as small doses. Before taking dosage first consult to your doctor, then you can take dosage as determined by your doctor.
  • The usual dosage, you can take 750 milligrams a day or you can divided the dosage into smaller doses, as determined by your doctor.

Uses of Gris-Peg

Griseofulvin medicine is used to treat fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails such as jock itch, athlete's foot, and barber's itch.

Side Effects of Gris-Peg

If you are taking Griseofulvin medicine, So first consult to your doctor about the possible side effects. The following side effects may occur due to Griseofulvin medicine. Side effects may occur:

  • Hives
  • skin rashes
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • epigastria distress
  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • fatigue
  • dizziness
  • insomnia
  • mental confusion
  • stomach upset
  • tiredness

Warnings and precautions before taking Gris-Peg:

  • If you have that type of diseases like lupus erythematosus or a lupus-like condition, then consult to your doctor. Do not start to taking Griseofulvin medicine without talking to you doctor. Avoid exposure to intense natural or artificial sunlight, Because Gris-PEG can make you sensitive to light.
  • If you are having any certain medical conditions, then do not start medication. Before taking this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have blood disorder (porphyria), severe liver disease (hepatic failure).
  • If you are taking Griseofulvin medicine, Consult to your doctor and Women should avoid becoming pregnant.
  • If you are taking Gris-PEG, then use other drugs or additional drugs for protection because Griseofulvin medicine may decrease the effectiveness of birth-control pills.
  • After taking the Griseofulvin medicine, you will feel like sleepy, dizzy or less alert. So don't engage in activities where you have to need alertness such as driving or using machinery.

Drug Interaction :-

Do not start any other drugs with Griseofulvin medicine without talking to your doctor, Because it may decreased, increased or altered the effect of Griseofulvin medicine. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Gris-PEG with the following drugs:

  • Blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin
  • Barbiturates such as phenobarbital
  • Oral contraceptives
Overdose

When you feel the overdose is suspected, then contact to your doctor immediately. Any medication taken in excess can have dangerous effects. Symptoms of a griseofulvin overdose may include:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • numbness and tingling
  • confusion.
