Racism is nothing new now. It has been in practice for years and has been responsible for an indefinite number of killings, suicides, and mental disorders. Racism is the only one to be held accountable for the mental and physical health of people with darker skin tones especially black people.
Various researches have also revealed the fact that in healthcare units he black patients are given a different treatment than white patients, not in a good way. Also, know that various cases and illnesses influence black people like stroke, cardiac arrest, cancer of various kinds, and even COVID-19 in an unbalanced manner.
Consideration of Racism as a Health Crisis
You must be aware of the brutality of Police in the huge ‘Black lives matter’ movement. The whole world came up to protest against this torturous behaviour. After continuous protests and rallies for 5 days in Columbia, Ohio, a virtual meeting was called by the city council and made the initiation of the resolution to categorize racism as a public-health-crisis.
Michael V Drake, who is the President of OSU (Ohio State University), showed “unqualified support” to this new resolution made in the meeting. He made the statement that the trouble for being a person of colour, especially black people, is not only spreading in our bodies but also getting spilled on the streets. He also added that if the people do not start to take this as a health crisis this toxicity would never get eliminated from society.
Upsetting Results of Racism
A study that was brought up from Auburn University in February this year said that encounters based on racism resulted in stress in many black people which gave rise to cellular aging. The effects of racism can be seen in various ways like physical and mental disorders.
Serious mental issues like clinical depression, getting anxiety attacks, and trauma are becoming something very common for black lives. But, being something to go on for ages, many people are not even bothered seeing racist bullying and attacks becoming the norm. It has also been uncovered that black patients are treated in a different way than how white patients are treated in a healthcare institution.
Physicians normally go for a cardiac procedure for the white patients but not for the black people even if the symptoms are the same. Non-white citizens also get less pain relief if compared to white people. This is based on a report from 2019 that recorded implied bias as a major factor.
The Bottom Line
So, these issues are quite revealing about the fact that racism is indeed a health crisis and should be taken way more seriously. Racism has been tearing the community apart. So many people were bound to take their own lives for being treated badly just for a darker skin tone. It is sad to see the way the world is moving. It is our responsibility to fix the muddles.
